1.
Dyslexia Support
I specialize in providing support to students with dyslexia. I am a strong advocate for the research based Wilson Reading Program. Through this program I have successfully taught countless students on the island to read. In addition to reading and reading comprehension, I am a skilled practitioner in teaching spelling and writing. I incorporate multisensory and visual supports into my curriculums, and I am knowledgeable regarding technology. I am a big advocate for accommodations for dyslexia and viewing it through a strength based lens.
2.
Tutoring
Tutoring takes place in my home office on Bainbridge Island. I use evidence based materials, creativity and humor when working with my students. I see kids who need help with reading and writing from second grade through twelfth grade. I offer support for math through 6th grade and math remediation and functional math through 12th grade. Additionally, I support general education classes, intensive intervention or home schooling. I also am available to work with high school students who want to learn American Sign Language.

Executive Function/ Social & Emotional Thinking
Success comes from developing a growth mindset about abilities and embracing mistakes and failures as learning opportunities.
Learning strategies for organization, time management, note taking, and study methods are important skills to practice and understand. In addition knowing our own learning differences, developing compassion and the skills to navigate in the world is crucial for success. Zones of regulation, social mapping, visual supports are all wonderful tools that I find help create better habits.

Consulting
I am a passionate educator with decades of experience in the field of special education. I consult with families on a variety of issues, such as school choice, homeschooling, curricula, understanding school evaluations, and Individual Education Plans (IEP). Navigating the school system can leave a parent feeling overwhelmed and confused. I help families understand their choices, and how best to communicate with school staff and advocate for their child.

About Me
I have been an educator and educational consultant for 40 years and have tutored students in my home for fifteen years. I am a Washington State certified special education teacher (K-12), in addition to English (K-12) and American Sign Language.
I retired this year from the Bainbridge School District after 24 years -- 14 years as a special education teacher at Commodore Options School for 1st - 12th grade and 10 years at Sakai Intermediate School for 5th - 6th grade social education. Before moving to Bainbridge, I taught in the Spokane, Edmonds, and South Kitsap school districts.

For the first ten years of my career, I was a teacher of the deaf and taught using American Sign Language. Once I moved to Bainbridge, my teaching focus shifted to special education; however, I continued to tutor high school students in ASL.

I am dyslexic and struggled in school as a child. I provide an inclusive environment and emotional support to children to create a safe environment. I am a highly skilled and experienced educator with decades of experience, and I can make a difference in your child's educational journey.
